Artist’s Statement

My work has drawn inspiration from the Neilston Mill in East Renfrewshire where several generations of my maternal family worked and although it has long since ceased to operate as a thread mill, the Mill stands as a symbol of a lost era and retains memories and experiences for many of the local families still living in the community.

Fragments from the past echo and thread their way throughout this monumental building to reveal a residue of human activity and the passing of time and has provided me with a rich source of material for my research, drawings, paintings and photography.

I have tried to capture a sense of place and atmosphere and it is important that my work has an element of ambiguity that allows the viewer to interpret the work in their own way: memories and experiences of going back to a once familiar place that has changed with the passing of time may still retain fragments from the past.
